The Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision prepares graduates to work as counselor educators, supervisors, researchers, and practitioners in academic and clinical settings with professional excellence and from a contextualized biblical worldview. This advanced degree in counselor education and supervision enables counselors to shift in identity and skill from clinical practitioners to scholar practitioners, learning the philosophy and skills of teaching and supervision while contributing to the field through advocacy, supervision, leadership, research, and educational instruction. Persons graduating with this doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision will be fully equipped to fulfill God’s purposes as ambassadors of the gospel to burgeoning faith-based and secular graduate counseling programs around the world.

This course will begin the process of orientation and identity development from counselors to counselor educators and supervisors, exploring an overview of the history and development of counselor education with an examination of the theoretical orientation and practical skills necessary to function effectively as a counselor educator. This course will examine current topics pertinent to teaching counselor education, ethical practice, and the development of identity across the five domains (teaching, clinical, supervision, research, leadership and advocacy) in the profession of counselor education, contextualizing faith into practice to produce biblically grounded and professionally excellent scholar practitioners.
In this course, students will explore and evaluate the major theories of the first, second, and third focuses on counseling and psychotherapy, including psychodynamic, Adlerian, Jungian, cognitive-behavioral, rational emotive behavior therapy, existential-humanistic tradition, logotherapy, and gestalt therapy. Students will also explore new forces in the continuation of counseling theory, including feminist, multicultural, positive psychology and wellness counseling, solution-focused, and brief therapy. Students will apply these and other theories to diverse clinical populations and setting, defining the function and role of their worldview and faith as a contextualization for understanding and interpretation of these models and their application to clinical care. Students will also consider how they will instruct students and advise supervisees on the application of these theories, analyzing related challenges in teaching and supervising alongside their own clinical applications.
This research course provides students with core knowledge and skills for understanding, analyzing, and designing research at the doctoral level. Students will explore the philosophy of science, the importance of theory in research, and research processes. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method research designs and methods are introduced. The ethical and social change implications of conducting research, producing knowledge, and engaging in scholarship are emphasized. Students will apply and synthesize their knowledge and skills by developing elements of simple research plans.
